SULLIVAN CO. Ind –  A Michigan man was jailed Sunday, following a battery investigation by Sullivan County Sheriff’s officials.

Deputies were called about the battery of a 17-year-old female.

Officers learned that the suspect was camping at the Sullivan County Park and Lake.

A nationwide check on the suspect found that 35 year old Rusty L. Banks of Midland, MI, was listed as a registered sex offender in Michigan.

Copeland was not registered with Indiana authorities as required by law.

Sullivan Count Sheriff Clark Cottom said even registered sex offenders that come into Indiana for a brief period are required to notify authorities of their whereabouts.

Police say that Banks admitted that he had battered the female and that did not notify Indiana authorities that he was entering the state.

Banks was arrested for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and Battery. He is being held in the Sullivan County Jail on $12,000 bond with 10% allowed.

Sheriff Cottom said his office will also be notifying Michigan authorities of Banks’ arrest, as he is also required to notify Michigan officials of his extended travels.
