VIGO COUNTY, Ind. – The old International Paper property is back under consideration for a potential Vigo County Jail location.
After much public protest, the Vigo County Commissioners announced back in May that they would not build a new jail at that specific site.
The county is facing a federal lawsuit over conditions at the jail and U.S. District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson told Vigo County that it needed to provide a timetable for progress on construction of a new jail by Oct. 15.
She also ordered the county to report on increasing staffing at the current jail.
The former International Paper site needs to be rezoned by the city council and the Terre Haute Board of Zoning Appeals.
The county will file the zoning appeals request for a new sheriff’s department and jail and that request would go before the board at its Nov. 7 meeting.
Commissioners say that they county owns that site and that it is cost prohibitive to have to try to locate and purchase other land.
