VIGO COUNTY, Ind – A recently passed income tax hike for Vigo County residents is already being collected.
The county council passed the tax hike in August.
The ordinance stipulated that the tax would be collected starting January 1st next year.
According the Tribune-Star, the state began collecting the higher tax on October 1st and that state officials informed the county that an ordinance adopted after December 31st of the immediate preceding year (2017) and before September 1st of the current year (2018) takes effect on Oct. 1 of the current year.
So since the county council didn’t wait to pass the tax after October 1st, it went into effect three months earlier than they really wanted.
