INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Vigo County officials told a federal judge Tuesday that significant progress has been made to improve jail conditions.

The county has been ordered to make immediate improvements after finding that jail conditions are unconstitutional.

Attorneys for Vigo County told Judge Jane Magnus Stinson the process is underway to hire 27 new jailers.

The judge wants to see what progress is being made on the building of a new jail but said she is pleased with what’s been done so far.

The former International Paper location has been chosen but it will be up to the Terre Haute City Council to decide if the property will be rezoned to allow for construction.

A spokesperson for the ACLU, one of the plaintiffs in the case, told News10 that the IP property seemed to be the most appropriate for the jail.

The city council could decide at their meeting on December 6th.
