TERRE HAUTE, Ind – The old YMCA in downtown Terre Haute could soon see new life.

On Thursday, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority board reportedly authorized $500,000 from its development fund and over $800,000 in rental housing tax credits for the building that has been vacant for more than a decade.

In 2017 the site was named an endangered landmark.

The project would create 34 apartments and six new townhouse units on an adjacent parcel.

Twenty percent of the units will serve those with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

The Commonwealth Companies will act as developer on the $6 million project at the property on Sixth Street between Walnut and Poplar streets.

The project will be called the Historic Walnut Square apartments.

The YMCA opened on the site in 1939 with a gymnasium, dormitory, meeting rooms, classrooms, racquetball courts, exercise rooms and a swimming pool with a sauna and steam rooms.

The Commonwealth Companies also received approval last week for their plan from the Terre Haute Board of Zoning Appeals.
