TERRE HAUTE, Ind — Indiana State Police Detectives are continuing their investigation of an officer-involved shooting in Terre Haute that has left one suspect dead.
A preliminary investigation shows that around 10:30 Tuesday night, a West Terre Haute Officer attempted to stop a pickup truck for failing to stop at a red light. The truck driver refused to stop. A Terre Haute Police Officer heard the radio traffic and assisted with the pursuit.
The vehicle eventually pulled into a parking lot near 10 1/2 Street and Wabash Avenue. The suspect got out of the vehicle with a handgun and ignored several commands to drop the weapon.
The suspect raised the handgun and began firing at the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. The suspect was later identified as 24 year old David Frederick of Vincennes.
Troopers say that they have found that Frederick had recently expressed thoughts of suicide.
The names of the officers involved will be released within the week. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is customary in officer-involved shootings.
Once the ISP investigation is complete, the report will be submitted to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office for a full review. No other information will be released at this time.
