VIGO COUNTY, Ind – At Monday night’s Vigo County School Corporation board meeting, Superintendent Haworth said that the corporation will hire its own director of technology. Those services are currently provided by outside vendor Joink.
The board also approved increasing lunch prices by 10 cents for the upcoming school year.
Elementary lunches will be $2.80 and middle and high school lunches will be $2.95.
Breakfast will also go up 10 cents to $1.35.
After the board meeting, nearly 30 people attended the second community meeting to discuss the district’s finances.
Superintendent Rob Haworth is proposing $4 million in budget cuts and a $7 million property tax hike to be approved by a referendum this fall.
The corporations cash balance has been declining significantly in the past few years.
State funding has been declining along with enrollment which is currently just over 14,000 students.
Some attending the meeting were concerned over an increased tax bill especially for farmers.
If the referendum is approved, the corporation will use some money to try and address the shortage of teachers.
Several area districts have higher pay for new teachers.
Two more community sessions will take place on July 8th and 22nd at the administration building downtown.
