VIGO COUNTY, Ind – At the request of Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse, the Indiana State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened around 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning at West Illiana Drive and South Crews Place, in West Terre Haute.

A press release from Public Information Officer Matt Ames sates that around 7:20 a.m., Vigo County Central Dispatch received a 911 call about a suspicious person in a rural area of West Terre Haute.  Deputies of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department attempted to locate the subject and found a vehicle down a lane that had the rear window busted out.  Officers assumed that the suspect was still in the area, and attempted to make contact by using a PA system, asking for the subject to come out of the wooded area. It was at this time that the subject then began to shoot at the deputies. They immediately took cover and called for assistance.

Other law enforcement officers from various agencies quickly arrived at the scene, setting up a perimeter just to the north of the deputies taking cover.  The subject continued to fire randomly at the officers, and was believed to be advancing north through the wooded area, but officers were still unable to actually see the subject firing the shots.  Eventually, the responding officers located the subject firing the shots, getting a good visual on the subject and ordered him to put down the weapon and show his hands.  The suspect then pointed the weapon towards them and shot directly at the officers giving the commands. The officers fired back.

The Terre Haute Special Response Team arrived at the scene with an up armored vehicle, and moved in to apprehend subject who was found dead.

An autopsy will be scheduled with the Vigo County Coroner’s Office and will be performed at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

No major injuries were reported by responding officers.  One deputy did acquire a badly sprained ankle as a result of the incident.

Indiana State Police are continuing their investigation.
