WASHINGTON, D.C.–You should listen to the medical experts, says Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.), but he’s not completely satisfied with their answers about when and how the economy should be restarted. Braun said he believes the country can be safe and help businesses get going again, as many states have.
“I never was quite comfortable with a one-size fits all approach even from the get go,” he said during a Wednesday morning news conference, after Tuesday testimony in the Senate from the country’s leading medical experts.
“You can see that is starting to well up across the country in terms of different states wanting to do things differently.”
Indiana is one of those states, with a phased restart already in progress.
“Maybe we should start learning from what we’ve seen across the country,” he said, paraphrasing senators Tim Scott and Rand Paul. “Look at Florida, who was projected to be with one of the most vulnerable populations, have done a good job.”
Braun said he would favor a county-by-county approach, looking at different parts of each state and how they have been or are being affected by the virus.
“I’m a firm believer that we can do both at the same time and not give anything back to the disease,” he said.
Braun also took issue with testimony that said the country does not have enough testing, saying he believes the administration has done a good job with clearing the way for more testing by pulling back on regulations.
Braun said that people and businesses should listen to the experts.
“Businesses know it’s not gonna be normal as we knew it before, with the best economy that we’ve had since I’ve been paying attention to it.”
But, he believes it’s necessary for state leaders to make the determination about reopening, what he calls “smart reopening”.
