VIGO COUNTY, Ind. – Tuesday evening the Vigo County Council met. The public was not allowed in due to the pandemic, but it was streamed live on YouTube.
There were protests outside the meeting by those wanting money spent on programs to keep people out of jail. There are suggestions that the money go toward mental health services, drug rehabilitation, homelessness intervention services and that it come from the public safety income tax.
Councilwoman Lisa Spence-Bennett suggested that there would be money available from that tax, but others aren’t so sure since fewer people are working due to the pandemic. There has been record unemployment due to furloughs and layoffs.
There also questions as to what that money can legally be spent on.
Also Tuesday, people in the medical field in Terre Haute were protesting.
They marched from the Vigo County Public Library to the county annex where the council meeting took place.
They said they realize there are injustices and racism, even in the medical field. They want to bring awareness and an end to it.
