TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –  More information is known about a fatal crash that happened Wednesday morning on Terre Haute’s south side.

Terre Haute Police Public Information Officer Ryan Adamson said that excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash that happened just after 6:00 a.m. on South 9 ½ and Helen Avenue.

The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control, struck a tree, the car then flipped over, crashed into a home and then caught fire.

39-year-old Eric Bennett of Terre Haute was the driver and 33-year-old William Egnor of Linton was the passenger. Both were wearing seatbelts, air bags had deployed,  and both were killed.

Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos told us that autopsy results show that Egnor died as a result of head injuries.  Bennett died as a result of head and neck injuries.

Toxicology tests are being performed but it could take from two to six weeks before results are known.

Detectives say they spoke with a person who told them that Bennett had recently installed a turbo in the 2000 Volkswagen Beetle and was taking it out for a test drive at the time of the crash.
