LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There will be hats, and masks, at the Kentucky Derby.

Churchill Downs announced it will allow spectators at this year’s Derby, which was postponed until September 5 because of the pandemic. The track plans to reduce capacity and urge fans to wear masks.

General admission will be limited to the infield, and not allowed on the “front side” or paddock areas. More information on ticketing and seating areas will be released in the coming days.

The Kentucky Derby usually draws a crowd of over 150,000. There are 60,000 reserved seats. Churchill President Kevin Flanery says this year’s general admission could be cut by as much as 60%.

The spectator and safety plan is for the entire Derby week, including Kentucky Oaks day.
