Terre Haute, In. – The New Vigo County Jail is already over capacity therefore the Vigo County Commissioners are contemplating building a work release center.  The jail currently has a rated bed count of 450 and operates legally up to 80% capacity, or about 360 beds filled. Sheriff John Plasse reports, there are 353 inmates in the jail and 57 plus one juvenile in other counties, which costs the county $35 a day.  The Juvenile costs $135 a day. Last year, Plasse reported, the county spent $100,967.50 to house inmates out of county.  In Indiana persons eligible for work release include misdemeanor and felony convictions with more than thirty (30) actual days executed sentence. Inmates receive credit for good time while participating in work release. All participants must sign a 4th Amendment Waiver which is valid throughout their commitment.  Funding for the project will most likely come from the County’s existing Local Income Tax funds. According to the Commissioners construction could possibly start mid next year and be completed as soon as late 2026 or early ’27.
