Terre Haute, In. – The Hulman Center was filled yesterday for the funeral services of Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse. Plasse passed away last Wednesday after a long brave battle with Pancreatic Cancer. After the services thousands of Vigo County citizens took time out of their day to pay last respects as they lined the route of his funeral procession which took the Sheriff past the Vigo County Sheriff’s office where a sheriff dispatcher broadcast his final 10-42 marking the last time an officer will be called out of service.
Plasse was in his second term as Vigo County Sheriff at the time of his death. From there the procession proceeded up town and past the Terre Haute Police Department. Plasse served as Terre Haute Police Chief under Mayor Duke Bennett and spent a total of 33 years on the Terre Haute Police Department. Plasse retired as a Sergeant Major with the 38th Infantry Division in the Indiana Army National Guard. Plasse served with the unit for 34 years. His military service included deployments in Afghanistan. Plasse was laid to rest in the Soldiers Circle at Highland Lawn Cemetery in a private grave side service with family and friends looking on.
