Indianapolis, In. – Shane Meehan, the man accused of killing Terre Haute Police Detective Greg Ferency on July 7th, 2021, made an appearance in Federal Court in Indianapolis yesterday to determine his competency to stand trial. On the date Ferency died Meehan is accused of throwing a Molotov Cocktail at the FBI building in Terre Haute and engaging in a gunfight with Ferency in which Ferency was shot and killed. Meehan was also shot but survived his wounds. After reviewing multiple reports conducted by AG-approved clinical psychologists detailing that a doctor had observed Meehan’s worsening mental faculties throughout the course of months-long observation. The federal judge ruled that Meehan is likely suffering from a “serious mental disease or disaffect”. The judge remanded Meehan into custody of the US Attorney General’s office to be committed for another four months of psychological evaluation and rehabilitation, in the hopes that he will be fit for trial after another round of treatment. If, after four months, Meehan is still ruled unfit for trial, the judge could choose to dispose of the charges or send Meehan to a high-security mental health facility to continue treatment.
