Duke Energy Proposes Replacing The Cayuga Generation Station

Cayuga, In. – Duke Energy is proposing to retire the 60-year-old Coal generating station in Cayuga with new natural as fired Turbines. The new gas turbines would be highly efficient and would add an additional 450-megawatt from the site.  Duke said as Indian grows the need for more electric power increases. Duke has added nearly 116,000 customers since their newest generating plant went online.  The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and the Office of Utility Consumer Counselor held a public meeting last week to allow residents to share their thoughts on the upgrade.  Vermillion county officials say not only will the plant produce cleaner energy but many jobs in county including hundreds of construction jobs building the facility.  According to Duke they would not retire the existing unit until they are fully replaced.  Construction could begin later this year with the first unit online in 2029 and the second in 2030.
