Nationwide – Today is November 11th Veterans Day the federal holiday that celebrates and remembers all who have served in the military, both in wartime and peacetime. The day has been observed in one form or another since 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson commemorated the first anniversary of the World War I armistice. Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11th the day the armistice ending World War I was signed. When the holiday began in 1938 it was known as Armistice Day. In 1954 it was changed to Veterans Day after World War II and the Korean War to honor veterans of all American wars. There will be no mail delivery today. Banks and local and Federal Government offices are closed. Most of the schools in the Valley will be open. The Marine Corps League will host the 3rd annual Veterans Day Parade today. It begins at 10 am and moves east down Wabash Ave. from 4th to 12th St. There will also be an Armistice Ceremony after the parade at VFW Post 972 and a celebration there at noon.
