INDIANAPOLIS — Snow is expected later this week, but before that, temperatures will only reach the 40s during the day and drop into the 30s at night, marking the coldest weather of the fall season so far.

“Instead of having the warm temperatures in the east and the colder temperatures in the west, some of the colder temperatures that have been more persistent out of the western part of the country are starting to move eastward with this system,” said Randy Bowers, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

Light rain is expected Wednesday morning, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in the early to mid-morning hours. Heading into Thursday, there’s some uncertainty about how much snow could fall.

“The main factor causing uncertainty is how much precipitation we’ll see,” Bowers said. “Northern parts of the state and Ohio have the best chance for snow, thanks to the rain and temperature drop.”

As temperatures drop, rain showers could change over to snow showers, and some areas of Central Indiana may see minor accumulations. “It doesn’t look like it’s going to be a problem for travel,” Bowers added.
