Clay City, In. – The former Clay City Clerk-Treasurer Karla Pipes is facing accusations after the Indiana State Board of Accounts filed a report on a special investigation report. In the report several instances of questionable expenses are outlined. Pipes was Clay City Clerk-Treasured from 2020 to 2023. The report says that Pipes wrongly spent more than $300,000 during her tenure. The questionable expenditures include $280,000 on the towns credit card at a fake business tied to her bank account. She’s also accused of issuing herself extra paychecks totaling more than $32,000. A check for $33,000 was written to a supposed vendor but it was deposited into her account. A few days later Pipe wired a large sum of money to a title company. Pipes also is accused of costing the town money by making late payments causing late fees and interest charges. The State Bord of Accounts is asking Pipes to repay $385,000. The FBI is investigating the case.
