
Statewide – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reported Monday they the highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in wild birds in Indiana. They also say that they have detected the H5NI virus, a subtype, has been found in 30 counties. No reports of the avian flu have come from Vigo, Sullivan or Parke counties but it has been detected in Vermillion County. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the public health risk for HPAI is low. However, it is possible for humans to contract HPAI. People who have close contact with infected animals or their environments, such as poultry farm workers or wildlife rehabilitators, are at higher risk.
