TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A downtown Terre Haute landmark is will soon have a new purpose.

Thursday afternoon, Indiana Landmarks announced that the First Financial Corporation, the parent company of First Financial Bank, has donated the former First Financial main office at 643 Wabash to Indiana Landmarks.

After a major restoration the building will become the new home of the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

The building at 643 Wabash is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was built in 1903.

In addition to donating the building, First Financial is also donating $110,000 to help Indiana Landmarks to start the renovation process.

Total cost of the renovation could be close to $2 million.

The first project will be the replacement of the roof which has failed.

Indiana Landmarks intends to pass ownership to CANDLES while retaining a protective covenant on the building in perpetuity.

First Financial moved out of that building and into its new corporate headquarters next door in 1988.
