TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Testing shows that Duke Energy coal ash ponds have contaminants at levels higher than groundwater protection standards.
Compliance data and released by Duke on March 1st were for the coal ash ponds at the now closed Wabash River Generating Station.
Duke must now create a corrective action plan for those ponds.
Coal ash is the waste produced from burning coal and can contain harmful toxins.
The figures show the ash ponds have high levels of arsenic, cobalt and lead.
Cleanup options include excavating ponds or capping the ponds and keeping the ash in place.
A spokes person for Duke Energy said that the company plans to post its corrective action plans in July and hold a public forum to review the plans.
