TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – You can now have chickens inside the city limits of Terre Haute, provided you play by the rules.

The chicken ordinance was passed at Thursday night’s Terre Haute City Council meeting by a vote of 6-2.

The ordinance does not allow for other birds such as turkeys or peacocks.

The new law sets requirements and limits on the number of birds, the size of the area that they must be kept and license requirements and fees.

Anyone who is granted a license will be subject to inspection by animal control officers. If an owner is found to be in violation of the rules, they could be subject to a fine of up to $250 per day for the fist offense. That could go to $2,500 per day and the loss of their license for subsequent offenses.
