INDIANA –Flooding has become a concern across Indiana with recent rain that fell over the weekend and more of it expected over the next couple of days.

“The rain will come to an end throughout the day today, but then we’re going to see more rain move in overnight. Overall, we’re seeing widespread amounts across central Indiana between an inch and two inches,” says Crystal Petit, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

Petit says the biggest concern is what happens in eastern Indiana over the next 24 hours.

“Especially overnight tonight, we’re looking at some potential flash flooding to develop there. As we get into tonight, we’re going to see that whole storm area move back to the west over central Indiana, possibly as far west as western Indiana. We’ll see more going into Tuesday. It will be Tuesday night before we see the bulk of the heavier rainfall move off to the east,” says Petit.

You can also expect cooler than normal temperatures.

“For most of the week, we’ll have highs only in the 60s. By the time we get to Friday, this system that is going to be with us for most of the week is going to move off. We could get into the 70s by Friday and then for the back into the 80s for the holiday weekend (Memorial Day),” says Petit.

In the meantime, she says there are things you can do to guard against being negatively affected by flooding.

“Don’t be driving into water on roadways. If you’ve got running water, especially going over a roadway, don’t be driving over that or into that. If you see “Do not cross” signs or “Flooded roads ahead” signs, don’t drive around those. Don’t drive around barricades. Use common sense,” says Petit.
