Mitchell, Indiana —Two police officers were shot in Mitchell, Indiana, early Sunday, stated Sgt. John Perrine of the Indiana State Police in Indianapolis. The unidentified shooter is dead.

According to State Police the incident began about 3:15 a.m. Sunday when an officer made a traffic stop at a gas station on State Road 37 in Mitchell. Two more officers arrived to assist.

A K-9 unit was brought in to search the car and narcotics were found.

The driver fled across State Road 37 while officers attempted to handcuff him.

Officers chased him and the suspect fired, hitting two officers.

One of the officers returned fire. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Both injured officers airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital were later listed in stable condition and are expected to survive. Their names and the name of the suspect have not yet been released.

One officer was from the Mitchell Police Department and the other two were from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

Police closed the area near 4800 State Road 37 in Mitchell during the investigation.

The officers wore body cameras and those recordings are being reviewed.
